The San Francisco 49ers released outside linebacker Aldon Smith on Friday after his arrest Thursday night by Santa Clara police on hit-and-run, DUI and vandalism charges.
When looking at Smith’s past seasons in the NFL it might be tempting to take a risk on him; 19.5 sacks two years ago after a 14 sack performance in his rookie season is enough for any GM to raise an eyebrow. If you asked them, I think they’d say the same thing.
Smith was attempting to park his vehicle, described as either a large SUV or truck, and allegedly crashed into an adjacent parked auto that was unoccupied, according to Clarke. He allegedly then left the area without reporting the accident.
He enters the final year on his contract – the Broncos picked up his fifth-year option – and his clean state could work in his favor in contract negotiations.
At the police department they processed Mr. Smith and then he was later transported to Santa Clara County Jail. “There’s no DUI”, Smith told reporters who were waiting for him. There’s no DUI, and I’m sorry for anybody I let down.
Smith was in the final year of his contract and 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said this week prior to the arrest that the team wanted to re-sign him.
