North Korea did not return fire but warned Seoul in a letter that it would take military action if the South did not stop the loudspeaker broadcasts along the border within 48 hours, the South’s Defense Ministry said.

In a response to growing worries over mounting debt, South Korea unveiled a set of measures aimed at mitigating risks from household borrowing in July. It did not mention whether there were injuries or damage on either side.

The explosions just hundreds of meters into the South’s portion of the inter-Korean Demilitarized Zone left two soldiers in need of leg amputations.

The mutual propaganda attacks mark a further deterioration of relations between the two Korean states that have engaged in no serious talks in recent months.

Japan marked 70 years on Saturday since the end of World War Two but faced criticism from South Korea and China, which accused it of failing to properly atone for its actions during the war.

“It is true that the prime minister’s statement made (yesterday) left much to be desired”, Park said in a speech marking the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II that ended its 1910-45 colonisation of the Korean Peninsula.
