Egypt is to unveil a major extension of the Suez Canal on Thursday, a mega-project that has emerged as a cornerstone of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s efforts to restore national pride and revive the economy after years of unrest.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has officially inaugurated the New Suez Canal, a highly-publicized project meant for boosting his nationalist image and shoring up the country’s battered economy.

The construction of the new lane began a year ago, on the orders of Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

“Petroleum products will arrive faster”, proclaimed Suez Canal Authority head Admiral Mohab Mohamed Hussein Mameesh.
