Down in the bowels of the Bird’s Nest Stadium, in the moments before marching out for his heat of the men’s 100 metres Saturday night, Canada’s young sprint star Andre De Grasse was feeling nervous.

“My coach said, ‘You’ll have to run 100 meters if you’re going to win the race, ‘” Bolt said after capturing his record ninth career gold medal at world championships.

USC Track and Field sprinter Andre De Grasse concluded his 2015 season by competing against the world’s best sprinters in the 100M Dash final at the IAAF World Championships early this morning in Beijing.

Bolt has now won 10 of 11 individual global sprint titles since 2008, with the only blip occurring when he false-started in the 100m final at the 2011 world championships.

(His time on Sunday was 9.79 seconds.) Perhaps more concerning is the arrival of the next generation of world-class sprinters, including collegians Trayvon Bromell (Baylor) and Andre De Grasse (Southern California), who emerged from relative obscurity to tie for bronze in 9.92 seconds.

But Usain Bolt yesterday underlined his status as the fastest man on the planet, crossing the line in his season-best 9.79 seconds to beat his rival by just one-hundredth of a second.

Earlier, the Jamaican had won his semi-final with a time of 9.96 seconds to qualify for the final.
