The software at the center of Volkswagen’s emissions scandal in the US was built into the automaker’s cars in Europe as well, Germany said Thursday, though it isn’t yet clear if it helped cheat tests as it did in the U.S.

Volkswagen’s supervisory board will pick the head of sports-car maker Porsche as its next chief executive to succeed Martin Winterkorn who resigned on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Chris Sumner, at robotics company FANUC United Kingdom, commented: ‘After the slowdown of United Kingdom vehicle production output in July, we’ve witnessed a resurgence in August.

Mueller, the head of VW’s Porsche sports-car division, had been widely expected to be Winterkorn’s replacement.

When the scandal broke out, Martin Wintercorn, the CEO of Volkswagen did what anyone in his position would have done in similar circumstances: saying sorry, at first and then buried the head in the sand while hoping it would slowly die down.

The statement came as investors awaited a decision from VW’s board after the market close on who will replace Martin Winterkorn as chief executive, amid reports that Porsche’s CEO Matthias Mueller is the front-runner.

According to the EPA website: “The November alleges that four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars from model years 2009-2015 include software that circumvents EPA emissions standards for certain air pollutants”.

“We don’t yet have figures for how many of these 11 million cars that are apparently affected are in Europe”, Mr Dobrindt said.

He had been tipped to replace Winterkorn during the latter’s bitter feud with his one-time mentor and former supervisory board chief Ferdinand Piech earlier this year.
