The transition government equally announced the creation of a commission of inquiry on the coup that left 11 people dead and 271 others injured.

A reporter for VOA in Ouagadougou, Emilie Iob, said the streets of the capital emptied out as word spread that the army was coming.

Negotiations between army chiefs and the presidential guard have broken down, a senior military officer said.

Burkina, a former French colony, hosts some 200 French special forces.

With interim president Michel Kafando, prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida and two ministers under arrest, the country is on the brink of chaos.
