Take a tour of the ‘El Chapo’ safe house
Mexican-American actress Kate del Castillo lashed out on yesterday against reports about her relationship with drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, saying they “aren’t truthful”.
Guzman is now being held at the same maximum-security prison from which he escaped in July with inside help, but Mexican authorities fear that he will buy his way out again with his vast wealth.
El Chapo apprehended following shootout in home state of SinaloaFive people died in gun battle at the home located in the seaside city of Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa.
The actor also shrugged off a suggestion that he was “taking hits” for agreeing to submit his article to Guzman prior to publication by Rolling Stone.
“I’m not a drinker but your presence is going to be something handsome”.
With its own communications network, and surveillance posts on the surrounding peaks, the rustic redoubt had everything the drug boss needed, but was hardly befitting of a mega-rich drug trafficker who was once on the Forbes list of billionaires.
A senior Obama administration official told television news shows on Sunday morning that Guzman’s boasting about his heroin empire in the interview was “maddening”. “That obviously has to do with issues”, Rose said. “When it will happen will depend on when we can agree on the date to do it”, Rose said, according to The Los Angeles Times. And the price they paid in pursuit of the whole truth is worth noting, if only to put Penn’s “scoop” into context.
“El Chapo” is now sporting a buzz cut behind bars – and his macho mustache is gone.
Asked about scrutiny of his controversial meeting with the fugitive drug lord at a hideout in rural Mexico, Penn on Monday would only say: “I’ve got nothin’ to hide”.
“It was an essential element, because we were following [Guzman’s] lawyer, and the lawyer took us to these people and to this meeting”, she told local radio.
Laurie Levenson, a Loyola Law School professor and former federal prosecutor, compared Penn’s legal situation to those of the journalists who conducted interviews with Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked documents.
Real journalism about the Mexican drug cartels can get you killed.
Penn also reiterated what he said in his article: He did not carry his cellular phone to Mexico from Southern California. But apparently they were not enough.
Reporters were seen walking inside the drain where Guzman fleetingly escaped through.
DVDs of the show were found in the house that marines raided in Los Mochis.
Mexico has received guarantees from a court in Texas that if it receives Guzman as part of his extradition, it will not seek the death penalty against him, the Attorney General Office’s head of International Proceedings, Jose Manuel Merino, said in a newspaper interview on Tuesday.
The official said that authorities were following Penn and Del Castillo’s movements all the time after they arrived in Mexico to meet with Guzman.
A Rolling Stone spokeswoman did not immediately return requests for comment.
