Talladega mayor, 74, beaten with ball bat outside barbershop
Barton told FOX6 that he knows who his attacker is. Green tried to flee the scene on a bicycle but has been arrested and charged with assault.
Barton spoke with AL.com Sunday morning and provided this account of what happened: “I pulled up to the barbershop and there was a guy in a hood and trench coat standing there”, he said.
YouTube Talladega Mayor Larry Barton (l.) has accused a former televised radio co-host, Benny Green (r.), of attacking him outside a barbershop on Saturday morning.
Vestavia Hills Police said in a press release that Green had been charged with first-degree assault and is held at the municipal jail with a bond worth $150,000.
“I keep hearing about this tape, but I don’t know anything about it”, he said.
Talladega’s Mayor Larry Barton is recovering from injuries he received when he was beaten with a bat, according to his son Delane Barton.
Springer also said that critics of the mayor are preparing to raise funds for Green’s defense. “So again, he has since been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail after the investigator got the warrant today”, said Lt. Brian Gilham, with the Vestavia Hills Police Department.
Barton was taken to the University of Alabama Birmingham hospital. “I opened the door and he started pounding me with a baseball bat”.
Barton says Green attacked him on Saturday. “If I hadn’t kicked him twice in the b*lls I’d be dead”.
Barton claims that he had no idea why Green would attack him.
He saved himself, he says, because he was able to kick his assailant in the groin from the driver’s seat of the vehicle. “He fell on the ground”. He said the Greens may have been having marital problems, but he denied any involvement in that trouble.
However, the Greens are now in the process of a divorce.
