Tamil Nadu floods: Jayalalithaa seeks Rs 4500 crore special package from Urban
Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that he has to declare the Chennai Floods in the state as a “National Calamity”.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa todayapprised Union Minister of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs M Venkaiah Naidu about the unprecedented magnitude of the calamity that struck the coastal Districts of Tamil Nadu includingthe city of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore recently.
At the meeting, Jayalalithaa highlighted certain critical areas with which the Naidu’s ministry is directly connected in the rehabilitation of the flood victims, a government release said. Tamil Nadu still demands 8500 Crores relief from Central Government and as per reports, Government of India has provided 1940 Crores.
Ms Jayalalithaa also sought a special package of Rs. 750 crore to build 50,000 tenements for families living in slums in Chennai Metropolitan Area.
The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday asked the Urban Development Ministry for a special package of Rs 4,500 crore to help restore urban local bodies worst hit by last week’s torrential rains.
The Rs 3,000-crore project is partly underground from Washermenpet to Korukkupet and then continues as an elevated corridor up to Wimco Nagar.
Subsequently, a central government official team surveyed the flood damage.
The Chief Minister mentioned that in all, 18,94,538 persons were evacuated and moved to safer places throughout the State and put up in 6775 relief centres.

Immediate relief amount of Rs.67.47 crore has been disbursed to 111,278 families, the statement added.
