Tamir Rice case: Police will not face charges over killing
Organized by the group Mass. Action Against Police Brutality, the protest was a reaction to a Cleveland’s grand jury’s decision Monday not to indict the officer who shot Rice on November 22.
“Simply put, given this ideal storm of human error, mistakes and miscommunications by all involved that day, the evidence did not indicate criminal conduct by police”, McGinty said. Tamir Rice’s fate was probably sealed when a 911 call was placed about him and dispatchers neglected to inform police that he could have been a child playing with a toy gun.
“For it to have fallen on the ground, it would have had to have been in Tamir’s hand, which means he would have had to have pulled that gun out”, he said.
Ohio Prosecutor Tim McGinty announced yesterday that there would be no charges against the police officers involved in the killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. He said Tamir was trying to either hand the weapon over to police or show them it wasn’t real, but the patrolmen had no way of knowing that.
LeBron went on to say that there are many issues that hit home for him that he has not spoken out about, such as the San Bernardino shooting, but that he only publicly discusses such matters when he feels he possesses the knowledge to do so.
The attorney for Loehmann, Henry Hilow, said critics have created a national dialogue about the shooting that don’t match the facts about what the officers knew.
Jackson and Williams said the city was ready for protests, saying they welcomed them as a part of the healing process.
A Twitter campaign brandishing the hashtag #NoJusticeNoLebron is calling on the star athlete to voluntarily sit on the sidelines in protest over the grand jury’s decision. “Both officers have to live with this the rest of their lives”.
The Times continues, “Had the department done so, it would have found that Officer Loehmann had quit a suburban police department where he had showed a “dangerous loss of composure” during firearms training and was found to be emotionally unfit for the stress of the job”.
Cleveland’s reputation has suffered because of some well-publicised police shootings.
Kasich warned against outsiders entering Cleveland to cause trouble. Longtime peace activist Greg Coleridge of Akron was asked how police could avoid another incident like the fatal shooting of the 12 year old.
“People are very upset about it and I believe legitimately and rightfully so”, Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson said of Tamir’s shooting and other incidents involving police around the United States. So, instead of trying to de-escalate or try anything other than using lethal force, Loehmann did the one thing police officers are trained to do best.
But unlike protests in Baltimore or Ferguson, Missouri, Clevelanders who rallied against the grand jury decision have, so far, remained peaceful.
