Target’s ‘Obsessive Christmas Disorder’ Sweater Is No Laughing Matter
Retail giant Target is being accused of poking fun at Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) with their latest holiday sweater.
This year, Target is selling bright red sweaters bearing the huge-print letters “OCD”. But a few critics say Target should hold itself to higher standards. A few Twitter users have taken to defending Target, saying they realize it was meant to be taken as a joke and an “ugly” sweater is no reason to get up in arms. “OCD is a serious mental illness that shouldn’t be mocked”, wrote another. A cursory Google search finds goods with “Obsessive Christmas Disorder” being sold on other sites such as Amazon, Etsy and Cafe Press.
Target’s sweater only makes things worse, angry customers are arguing.
Antoinette D’Orazio, a psychotherapist who specializes in treating the disorder, told TODAY.com OCD affects a few 2.2 million American adults, and almost 27 percent sufferers attempt suicide.
In fact, a few who shared that they have OCD, described the sweater as “awesome”.
While Target regrets that a few customers are offended by the sweater, there are no plans to remove the item, according to Josh Thomas, a Target spokesman.
