Taxi Driver Turns In Lost $187000, Gets $100 Reward
A man who left about Dollars 187,000 cash in a Boston taxi has been reunited with his money thanks to an honest cabbie, police said Tuesday.
An unidentified man left the bag of cash in MacCausland’s cab on July 2. When he searched the backpack to try to find some form of identification, the cab driver found the huge amount of cash, which he immediately took over to the Boston Police Headquarters. They were able to track the owner down at the same hotel, where they discovered that the man, 47, had recently become the heir to a small fortune. Then however, as MacCausland noted, he did not get a reward. He was surprised to find three bundles of $50 and $100 bills. He first anxious the man who had left the money behind could be risky and then wondered if he should just keep the stash and head home. That passenger had his bag returned too, he said.
Police examined the bag and its contents – worn clothes and papers, prescription bottles and of course, the cash.
A Boston taxi driver is being praised for turning in a huge sum of money left in his backseat last week.
But after about 30 minutes of turning down other fares, MacCausland gave up and left – only to discover a backpack the man had left behind.
MacCausland said he’s enjoying the accolades.
During the trip, he asked MacCausland to stop because he wanted to meet a friend. “I think it was the right thing to do”, MacCausland said about his decision to return the money.
As word spread of the good deed – including talk of a commendation from Boston Police Commissioner William Evans – attention quickly focused on a cabbie whose heart was considerably bigger than his wallet. The man had reportedly just cashed in his inheritance. “I get that much for returning a lost wallet”. A 47-year-old homeless man, who declined to give his name to reporters out of embarrassment over the episode, supplied the officers with documentation proving that the money was legitimate.
