1989 crossed the 5 million mark in the week ending July 5, with another 26,000 sold (its total now stands at 5.015 million).
1989 is Swift’s third album to sell 5 million copies, following Fearless (released in 2008) and her self-titled debut (released in 2006). It reached the milestone in the 36th week of its release, making the album’s climb to 5 million the speediest since Usher’s 2004 album “Confessions“, which hit the 5 million mark in just 19 weeks of being on sale. (21 has sold 11.1 million copies to date.).
Taylor has now blown past Adele’s 21, which took 42 weeks to hit sales of five million in late 2011.
We really have to hand it to Taylor Swift – she went from successful country artist to winning a fight against one of the largest and most powerful companies on the planet when she called Apple out for their refusal to pay artists during their three-month trial run of Apple Music. Her music video for “Bad Blood”, which features many of her celebrity friends, such as Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss and Gigi Hadid, set the Vevo record for most views within 24 hours. Its cinematic music video was directed by Joseph Kahn and was made available on Vevo last November.
