Taylor Swift Wins Early Grammy for ‘1989’ Album
Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez chose to make it ladies night for this year’s Grammy Awards.
By the time she took the stage Monday, Swift had already won two Grammys during the show’s pre-telecast. “This for Snoop Dogg ‘Doggystyle, ‘ this for ‘Illmatic, ‘ this for Nas”.
Kendrick is expected to be a major force throughout the night; the emcee is performing and is up for the Best Album award, which hip-hop fans everywhere have their eyes on. And rap trailblazers Run DMC will be honored with the Grammy lifetime achievement award.
The Monday afternoon ceremony at the 58th Grammys kicked off with Swift snagging best pop vocal album in the first honor for 1989 and later also won best music video for Bad Blood.
Alabama Shakes, the bluesy indie rock band defined by Brittany Howard’s thunderous voice, also won two Grammys – Best Alternative Music Album and Rock Song.
Brit rocker Courtney Barnett could also upset – her breakout album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit blew critics away this year, many calling it one of the best albums of last year.
“Oh, hold one I want to call Taylor”.
Swift was nominated for seven Grammys for music off “1989”, the former country prodigy’s transformation into a pop superstar.
LL Cool J will host the 58th annual Grammy Awards, airing live on CBS. Swift and Weeknd earned seven nominations overall, but it’s Adele who has the chance to own the night, though she isn’t competing for an award. Other performers include the Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup made up of Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper and Joe Perry.
Swift was too busy rehearsing for her Grammy performance to pick up her Best Pop trophy, so 1989 producer Jack Antonoff went in her place – calling Swift live from the stage to let her know she won.
“I never even dreamed of this moment, so thank you so much”, Howard told the crowd in her thick Southern drawl. But a prize neither of them took home, despite being frequent collaborators with friends and contemporaries, was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance which was won by one of the songs of 2015, Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson, featuring Bruno Mars.
Rihanna cancelled her performance at the ceremony, tweeting: “so sorry I couldn’t be there…”
Taylor Swift looked fantastic when she stepped out for the Grammy Awards in a stunning, two-piece ensemble as she rocked an orange bandeau top and a full, hot pink skirt – and she looked STUNNING.
Dozens of Grammy Awards are handed out during a pre-telecast before the main show begins.
