TCL (Alcatel) to Build Next BlackBerry Hamburg Smartphone?
It also proves the previous rumor that the phone will be built by TCL. We’ve even seen leaked renders of the devices in the past with the company’s new branding.
BlackBerry is expected to release two Android phones this year following the success of its first Android phone, the BlackBerry Priv. CEO John Chen hinted that more details are coming in July.
Chen said he would reveal more details about the smartphones in July, without divulging any further details.
BlackBerry launched its first Android handset a year ago in the form of the BlackBerry Priv, but the high price of the device limited its success. According to the listing, the smartphone is manufactured by TCL and runs on Android Marshmallow.
Could this be the BlackBerry Hamburg?
All signs point to a business collaboration between BlackBerry and TCL/ Alcatel for the upcoming BlackBerry Hamburg, but nothing is confirmed at this point.
BlackBerry has been busy the past months working on the new mid-range phones. A Wi-Fi Alliance certificate (that’s since disappeared) attributed the model number STH100-2 – believed to be the Hamburg – with TCL, causing us all to scratch our heads about what BlackBerry actually does these days. Having TCL handle the manufacturing would allow BlackBerry to focus on software and bolster its position on the market, after losing significant ground to rivals. When asked during the earnings call for details about the phones, Chen declined to answer but did state that he was thinking of making an announcement in July. Unlike BlackBerry’s last Android smartphone, there is no slide-out keyboard on the Hamburg. However, the product was unsuccessful in generating high profit and sales numbers for the company.
We’re looking forward to seeing how things will unfold, and we’ll keep you up to date as soon as we have more information.
