TCU QB Trevone Boykin apologizes for his actions in statement
TCU football coach Gary Patterson has suspended quarterback Trevone Boykin for Saturday’s Alamo Bowl game after he was charged with felony assault of a police officer.
Boykin faces a third-degree felony charge after allegedly striking an officer during a bar fight on late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the officer had facial abrasions but is otherwise fine.
Boykin was also suspended from TCU’s Valero Alamo Bowl game tomorrow against OR as a result of his arrest.
The school said in a statement that they are aware of the situation and will “closely monitor” it and “evaluate additional details as they become available”. Boykin reportedly struck a bar employee and was removed by bouncers.
Boykin was arrested following an altercation at a San Antonio nightclub.
The skirmish was set off by Boykin being heckled in the bar about the upcoming game, McManus said.
“At some point, Mr. Boykin struck the officer, both of them fell, his teammates tried to get him away – prior to this, his teammates had tried to take him back to the hotel, and he broke away from them and came back, and then he got into it with the officer”, McManus said. McManus said the department has ordered cameras to record interactions with the public, and those will be deployed by the bike officers in the near future. The police report said Boykin was taken to the ground, where the struggle continued until police threatened to use a Taser.
Boykin is facing charges of assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and public intoxication. “He’s a good person”, TCU running back Aaron Green said. Jesse Salame said Boykin is being held on $5,000 bond. “I’m hurting from it. I won’t lie”.
Senior Bram Kolhausen will likely be the Frogs starter with freshman Foster Sawyer backing him up. Boykin, who is a senior, finishes his career at TCU having thrown for 10,728 yards and 86 touchdowns. Kohlhausen filled in for Boykin twice this year, but his results were underwhelming, completing 27 of his 43 passes for 369 yards and three touchdowns to one interception.
