Team GB Athlete ‘Robbed’ At Rio Olympics
Unconfirmed reports said the athlete was held up by a weapon, but the BOA has denied the claims.
A member of Team GB was held up at gunpoint while enjoying a night out in Rio, it was reported this morning.
Team GB have been enjoying enormous success at the Rio 2016 Olympics, but their athletes and officials were shocked when they learnt that one of their members was held at gunpoint while enjoying nightlife in Rio.
It says members must only leave the village in British Olympic Association/Local Organising Committee/UK Athletics transport as “taxis can not be considered safe late at night”.
The Guardian also obtained a copy of the email that was sent to the athletes, which stated, “If you are planning on going out after dark and have no way of returning other than via taxi, do not go out”.
“This makes you too big a target for theft/crime”, it warned, adding that athletes must avoid using anything other than organized transport to leave the village after dark.
It comes amid controversy over the alleged gunpoint robbery of USA swimming star Ryan Lochte and three team-mates at the hands of men posing as police officers. “We can confirm there has been an incident of theft involving a Team GB athlete returning to their accommodation”, a spokesperson said this morning.
Team GB long jump star Greg Rutherford was also been targeted, with a phone containing pictures of his young son stolen at the weekend.
His team-mates Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were pulled off a flight home and questioned by officers in Rio, but have now been allowed to leave.
A Brazilian police official claims the swimmer fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro. Further, they labelled Rio as “not a safe environment” and stated that a general ban on leaving the village after dark could be introduced if further problems arise.
