Team Sky’s Chris Froome to ride in the Vuelta a Espana
Speculations are that Sky teammate Geraint Thomas will feature in the race after a strong Tour de France last month.
Froome 30, became the first Briton to win the Tour de France twice in July.
Teams are required to submit a provisional 14-rider long-list for the race which can be changed two days ahead of the race start when the team is whittled down to nine, and Tour de France 2015 victor Froome has been listed by the British squad. He was abused by roadside spectators, was called a “doper”, had urine thrown at him and was spat on as unfounded allegations were made about his performances.
Quintana finished second behind Froome in Paris this year, Nibali was the Tour champion in 2014, while American racer Tejay van Garderen will also compete. Alberto Contador will not attempt to defend his title from a year ago.
Colombian Nairo Quintana is expected to once again provide Froome’s stiffest competition in the pursuit of a third Grand Tour victory of his career.
