Team USA finishes historically low in women’s figure skating
She also praised herself for helping the USA women’s team secure a bronze medal in the team event.
“I found an fantastic high level in my skating that I thought wasn’t possible and I found. passion for the sport that I thought was not possible”, she added. That score, nearly nine points short of Tennell’s season-best in the program, earned her a ninth-place finish among Thursday’s 24 skaters and ninth overall when combined with Tuesday’s short program.
The U.S. had been successful at the Winter Olympics before Fleming, winning back-to-back golds with Tenley Albright and Carol Heiss.
At a news conference after the competition, the top two medalists – both teenagers representing Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation – said the indomitable Kostner had been an inspiration.
For now, though, she is processing her time at the Olympics.
Just like Meissner’s triple axel gave Nagasu something to work toward, Nagasu’s is inspiring today’s young skaters. At the last five world juniors, the Russians and Japanese have won all of the women’s medals.
When Nagasu takes the ice for the short program, both of her parents will be in the audience to watch her skate. The result was a 4 a.m. wakeup for her Olympic short program.
Nagasu is the only woman here who had a triple axel in her program. The women will compete in the ladies single free skating even on Friday.
Bradie Tennell competes her free skate at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 on February 23, 2018 in Gangneung, South Korea. Unable to skate at all for months at a time was “not very pleasant or fun for me”, Tennell says now, with the injuries far in her past but not her mind. “Obviously, my programs could have gone a little bit better”.
Skating to Patrick Doyle’s “Cinderella Medley”, Tennell completed a triple toe loop and double jump, but she stumbled with extra steps on a triple jump and triple lutz en route to a score of 128.34 in Thursday’s women’s free skate.
While Nagasu has Olympic experience from 2010, she spoke after her free skate of “other commitments” that made these Games hard, such as not being able to take a warm shower until Friday.
“It’s been a long three weeks, and we got here and got to walk in the opening ceremonies and then I saved the team event, with Adam (Rippon) and the Shibutanis”, Nagasu said. “When I’m up in the air I turn three-and-a-half times, hope for the best, and I land on my right foot”.
“You should try going out there and performing in front of thousands of people and putting all your jumps on the line”. The rest is just a show. “I’m glad my parents will experience the Olympics with me”. Before this year, every American team since World War II had yielded at least a sixth-place finish.
As she eloquently transitioned from element to element, viewers could occasionally see a black mark that read USA.
“Finishing top 10 is already a huge accomplishment”, Chen said of the team.
Last year, U.S. Figure Skating reported its fourth straight year of membership growth. But even if she had finished dead last, the US would have ended up beating the Italians for the bronze.
The reasons have been talked about. The sport was left without a clear American face at a time when more extreme sports, such as snowboarding, were ballooning in popularity. Coaches not conforming to the new judging system implemented after the 2002 Olympic scandal. The top two spots will be tough for anyone to touch.
No American woman had qualified for the Grand Prix final in December that includes the top six from the fall season. The U.S. earned one bronze medal total from those eight events. The three siblings have been raised by a single mother, Jeannie, who Tennell credits as “wonder woman”. “I had a renewed sense of motivation and was able to get down to business”.
She wasn’t the only American to wipe out on the ice at this year’s Olympics.
Meanwhile at the rink, she and Zakrajsek worked relentlessly on perfecting the triple axel.
“For sure I am extremely disappointed”, said Chen, who skated to “Tango Jalousie”. I kept working hard. She even took shots at other skaters, though it was unclear if she even realized she was doing it. “I could tell that something was just a little off”, she said of the fall.
“I don’t have the strength to do that”, said Nagasu, a 24-year-old veteran. “I felt like I should have skated better and I could have focused better”.
