Team USA takes Rio Olympics medal race with ease
The stated goal was to grab at least 10 golds and finish among the top 10 in the medal race.
Usain Bolt finished off his triple-triple – three Olympics, three sprint golds in each – for Jamaica, in what he said was his last games.
“We are in a hard moment as a country right now, we can’t hide that, but the Games were scheduled and I’m glad we could enjoy them”, said Alessandro Freitas, also from Rio.
She said: “For the past fortnight, the people of the United Kingdom have been filled with pride as we’ve watched our Olympians take victory in so many sports with power, grace and control”.
The previous record for USA medals at a fully attended Olympics was 110, set at Beijing eight years ago. Gold, silver, bronze. The atmosphere has been brilliant.
“That island has given me so much”, Puig said.

After London 2012, funding was slashed for sports which didn’t reach their medal targets, and increased for those who succeeded. For all the troubles before and during the Games, Rio will surely be remembered for great sporting moments. Overall, the USA collected 28 medals in team events, including three golds (basketball and water polo) and two bronzes (indoor volleyball) in traditional team sports.
US women left Rio with 27 golds – by far the most among any team of female Olympians at these games – and 61 medals total. A day later, the USA women’s basketball team extended its Olympic women’s record to six straight Olympics titles and eight overall.
Completing a third consecutive unbeaten run to Olympic gold, the United States captured a sixth Games title in seven tries with National Basketball Association talent by routing Serbia 96-66 in Sunday’s final.
