Ted Cruz Booed at RNC 2016 for Not Endorsing Donald Trump
The Republican National Convention crowd turned on Sen.
On Thursday, Cruz doubled down on his decision to not endorse. “If they fulfill their obligations to us, the answer is yes”, he said. Trump is already stealing back some of the headlines by saying he wouldn’t automatically have the backs of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations should they be attacked. Trump also made suggestions that Cruz’s Cuban-born father had indirect links to John F. Kennedy’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.
“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Cruz told the delegation.
But he believes Cruz “used very bad judgment”, adding that “he was not respectful to the invitation by the convention to come and speak”.
As he appeared on stage Wednesday night, Cruz basked in a minute-long standing ovation.
Cruz arrived in Cleveland with an eye on his own political future, holding a large rally with hundreds of supporters who greeted him with chants of “2020” – the next presidential election.
He told the Texan delegation that he had no intention of going so far as to vote for Hillary Clinton in November.
During the hotly contested primary battle, Cruz and other Republican contenders had vowed to support the eventual nominee, so many had expected him to endorse Trump. Newt Gingrich had to play clean up, explaining that what Cruz meant to say was “vote for Trump”.
“And to those listening, please, don’t stay home in November”, Cruz said.
It’s this private fear that Cruz was speaking to when he told audiences “vote your conscience”.
Cruz stood on stage with the presidential candidates during the primary and pledged to vote for the Republican nominee.
I got a small taste of the private talk of Republicans on Wednesday afternoon, when I went into an RSVP-only happy hour for the Young Republican National Federation, in a private club downtown.
Mr Cruz voiced neither support for nor opposition to Brexit during his prime-time address last night but pointed to the United Kingdom vote as an example of the ground-up insurgency for populism against political elites and likened the decision to the rise of Donald Trump in the US.
But during Wednesday night’s convention speech, Cruz only congratulated Trump and told delegates to vote their conscience. The outspoken Trump backer, like Cruz bested by the real estate mogul in the GOP primaries, said the voters made clear that Trump is their choice. Ted Cruz rejected calls to endorse the GOP ticket.
“If a convention’s goal is to unite our behind one candidate, Sen”. “I think you saw at the end of the speech that the crowd was waiting for him to do the right thing and realized that he wasn’t going to do it”.
