Ted Cruz: ‘CNN got it correct’
“Donald Trump’s really seen some cratering in his support this week”, said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. After a brief effort to appear statesmanlike and spin his success positively, Trump is now accusing Texas Sen.
After leading in almost all of the polls heading into the Iowa caucus, the GOP frontrunner took in 24.3% of the vote to Mr Cruz’ 27.7%. Cruz’s team hit back by telling Trump to seek help for addiction to the social media site.
Trump referred to an email that Cruz’s campaign sent on Monday that implied another Republican candidate, Ben Carson, was about to drop out of the race and that his Iowa backers should be urged to vote for the Texan instead.
Carson ended up finishing fourth in the Iowa caucus and called Cruz’s actions “shameless tactics and dirty political plays”.
“And then when the clarification was put out by Ben Carson saying it’s untrue, they got the statement and they didn’t put it out”, Trump said Wednesday.
“And finally, Cruz strongly told thousands of caucus-goers (voters) that Trump was strongly in favor of ObamaCare and “choice” – a total lie”, Trump wrote, before concluding the rant with an extraordinary demand. It did not, although the tycoon and television personality remains well in the race for the party’s presidential nomination ahead of the New Hampshire state primary vote on Tuesday.
Later, he added he would “never give that up to go between first and second in Iowa”, shaming reporters who suggested otherwise. Republican donors and operatives fear a protracted battle between the two creates greater potential for Trump or Cruz victories before the Republican convention this summer, according to Yahoo Politics.
Twitter was abuzz Wednesday morning over Trump’s accusations.
All the other Republican candidates got hammered, including Jeb Bush, who spent some time and money in the state.
Sanders enters the primary with a double-digit lead over Clinton in the polls in a state that Clinton won in the 2008 primary.
