Ted Cruz faces litigation over eligibility to run for Prez
In his lawsuit, Lawrence Joyce from IL has objected to Cruz’s placement on the IL primary ballot next month.
Joyce has challenged Cruz’s right to be president because of his birth in Canada while similar objections have been previously raised by GOP rival Donald Trump. He appealed the decision and was granted a hearing for Friday before Judge Maureen Ward Kirby.
Donald Trump has frequently questioned Cruz’s eligibility throughout his campaign, and even wrote on Twitter last week; ‘If @TedCruz doesn’t clean up his act, stop cheating, & doing negative ads, I have standing to sue him for not being a natural born citizen’. As per the American constitution, only US-born citizens are eligible to run for presidency.
“What I fear is that Ted Cruz becomes the nominee, come September, Congressman Alan Grayson of Florida will go forward with his threats and probably several other Democrats will file suit to prevent Ted Cruz from being on the ballot”, Joyce, a pharmacist and attorney from Poplar Grove, Ill, told USA TODAY.
Sen. Cruz said, “I’ll confess”.
The results contrasted with those of a national poll conducted this week by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal that showed Trump dropping into a national dead heat with Cruz in the race for the Republican nomination for the November 8 election to succeed Democratic President Barack Obama.
On broader questions, voters say they are more interested in supporting a candidate who agrees with them on the issues than supporting one who can win.
The Illinois man said he was hesitant to file the lawsuit out of concern that getting involved in such a high profile case could be detrimental to his own law practice.
“I am prolife, and I do not support taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood as long as they are performing abortions”, Trump said in a statement distributed by a campaign spokesperson.
Since he announced his candidacy last summer, Trump has leveraged his celebrity and deep pockets to wage an unfiltered campaign that has upended the Republican primary.
As soon as Ted Cruz took the stage at the CNN town hall, things got ugly. Now the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago has agreed to hear the case. He says, “We’re spending a little bit more money here and hopefully we’ll do well”.
