Ted Cruz refuses to say if he’s voting for Donald Trump
That’s bad enough. But this came after two days of the convention when nobody was talking about Donald Trump because they were talking about the Melania Trump, campaign manager Paul Manafort, My Little Pony, and Meredith McIver.
When a protester disrupted his speech, Trump did not order security to “get ’em out” as he often does at rallies. “And it’s Donald Trump and Mike Pence – people with optimism, people with courage, people who care about the future of America, rather than someone like Ted Cruz who only cares about himself”. The only memorable utterance in that time was when Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi turned heads by making the statement, “Terrorists deserve to die!”
Then, Trump sparked more questions about his Oval Office readiness by suggesting in the midst of the convention that the USA might not defend America’s North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners with him as president. America is better than this.
Trump’s address was the most crucial moment yet in his transformation from a brash tycoon and reality star with a sometimes vulgar tongue to a politician with an expansive vision of disruptive change who could become President.
Throughout the speech, Trump’s nationalist rhetoric energized the crowd, which erupted with chants of “USA! USA!”
Fox News Channel’s Chris Wallace said the speech read better on paper than it was delivered.
Trump said he will overhaul tax laws and energy rules, get rid of regulations and decrease taxes, while offering few specifics. Then things shifted dramatically.
Cruz did not apologize for his right of free speech; nor did Trump ever apologize for maligning Cruz’s family.
Speakers for the evening are U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee; Gov. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma; RNC Chairman Reince Priebus; Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. and Ivanka Trump, daughter of Donald Trump and executive vice president at the Trump Organization.
Susan Hutchison, chair of the Washington state delegation, said she confronted Cruz after his speech and called him a “traitor to the party”.
“If he gives it, I will not accept it”, Trump said at a news conference in Cleveland at the close of the Republican National Convention. The Texas senator’s speech sparked a torrent of boos.
“To make life safe in America, we must also address the growing threats we face from outside America: we are going to defeat the barbarians of ISIS”. The man was a Cruz supporter, but he expressed frustration with Cruz for doing what he did. The man stated that he felt Cruz should have put loyalty to the party over positioning for a 2020 run. Political pundits are left wondering what Cruz was hoping to accomplish with the “vote your conscience” line. Did Cruz think doing so would help him retain his image as a stalwart conservative among the NeverTrump people?
He was surprised Cruz didn’t endorse Trump and he does believe the episode will hurt the party’s chances for unifying, especially when it comes to Cruz supporters backing Trump.
Throughout this week’s convention, pro-gay Republicans hailing Trump as the most supportive nominee in the party’s history have had their elation tempered by the stark realization that their party is still pushing a very different message.
“I’ll be watching and listening”, Cruz said, but added: “I won’t sit down, shut up, support the team”.
Trump also said he is a “big fan” of the Kurds and expressed a desire to see unity between the them and the Turkish government, something he thinks can be done with negotiations. The day’s convention activities closed on a high note. As the convention’s final night began, Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona’s Maricopa County vouched for Trump’s hard-line credentials on immigration. Fox News Channel was the top-rated television outlet for convention coverage, followed by NBC and CNN.
