Ted Cruz, the victor of the Iowa caucuses, congratulated Donald Trump on Wednesday night for winning the Republican presidential nomination, but he did not outright endorse him, an omission that drew a huge reaction from the crowd with many booing him as he left the stage.
According to the following tweet by MSNBC reporter Cal Perry, Cruz’s wife Heidi was escorted out by security, due to concerns for her safety.
“If you love our country and love your children. stand and speak and vote your conscience”, Cruz told the crowd.
Cruz told Texas Republicans he would not vote for Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, and he discouraged Texans from writing in his name in November. “Frankly, he was the only speech in the convention that was poorly received by the body in the hall”, he said.
Cruz, who was the runner-up in the Republican primary, was met with a roaring reception by the crowd at the Quicken Loans Arena.
“We didn’t know he wasn’t going to endorse Trump, but that wasn’t the point”.
Cruz said he will be “watching and listening” but won’t “sit down, shut up, support the team”.
GOP stalwarts rushed to morning airwaves and took the baton from delegates, who hours earlier rained boos on Cruz for refusing to back Trump on the convention floor in Cleveland.

As Cruz’s speech went on and on without an endorsement, the people sitting next to me started yelling: “Say it!” He wanted to offer his vision for what it meant to be a Republican, even if this differed with the party’ nominee. “Donald Trump speaks to Americans in a different way than politicians have in the past”.
Huckabee, who has thrown his support behind Trump and whose daughter is a spokesperson for the GOP presidemntial nominee, then tore into Cruz. Trump had nasty comments about Cruz’s wife Heidi’s appearance and tried to link Cruz’s Cuban-born dad Rafael to the JFK murder.
Cruz aide Jason Johnson said the Texas lawmaker told Trump in a phone conversation two days ago that he would not endorse him during his speech, a decision New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called “totally selfish”. He said his father is the one candidate for president “who does not need this job”.
