Ted Cruz will vote for former rival Donald Trump
Welcoming Cruz’s decision, Trump said he is greatly honored by the endorsement of the Senator.
Cruz ended his post by saying that a year ago he pledged to endorse a Republican nominee, and that he is now honoring that commitment. On Thursday, the Trump campaign accepted the resignation of an OH volunteer, Mahoning County chair Kathy Miller, who told the Guardian newspaper, “I don’t think there was any racism until Obama got elected”.
“Our country is in crisis”, Cruz wrote.
He also doubted the fitness of Clinton for the presidency while highlighting that her policies would harm millions of Americans.
Well, I know you wondering how Trump responded to all this and, surprisingly, he was very gracious, considering how he previously said he would not accept an endorsement from Cruz (who he’s previously called “Lyin’ Ted) even if he received it”.
Yet Cruz’s support was by no means a foregone conclusion. “And I intend to keep my word”, he wrote.
I, however, found it praiseworthy that a politician would put principle over party. I hope I am wrong.
To other conservatives, who had come to see Cruz as a champion of the movement, today’s endorsement was just as shocking – and then, suddenly, obvious.
But many others supported the move: “Man of honour and integrity”, one wrote. Should Trump win I will consider voting for his reelection should he govern well. There is a lot at stake which is bigger than us all. “For God and country”. One of them, according to Cruz, goes by the name Hillary Clinton.
In the early stages, the Texas firebrand played footsie with Trump.
Now, that hero for anti-Trump conservatives has seemingly reversed himself.
Cruz finished second in the Republican nomination, surviving while all the more mainstream candidates flamed out. However, as the field winnowed, the amity between the erstwhile rivals evaporated.
Had he supported him back in May it would have been too soon and there was too much bad blood. By buckling, Cruz was suggesting that Trump had failed ideological tests and it hadn’t mattered, and that it didn’t really matter that Trump had smeared his wife and father.
After Cruz gave his speech at the convention, in what appeared to be a symbolic act of shunning by his own party, he was blocked from entering billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson’s luxury box at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans arena.
Ultimately it is up to Cruz to vote his own conscience and for me to vote mine.
January 15: Cruz criticizes Trump for embodying “New York values” – but instead attacks all New Yorkers.
Now the vast majority of Republicans tell pollsters they’re backing Trump. During the Republication primary, Trump launched series of personal attacks against Cruz including that of his wife and father.
“He dropped out of the primary race in May”. Ted Cruz announced Friday he will vote for the Republican presidential nominee anyway in order to deny the White House to Hillary Clinton. He was a tough and brilliant opponent.
The Texas senator says on Facebook that he made the decision for two reasons. In Gallup polls, his favorable rating with Republicans, already lower than Trump’s, tumbled 20 points.
