Assistant Chief J.R. Haney of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire District said some of marine animal attacked the teen, but said he could not confirm it was a shark.
A 15-year-old boy was apparently bitten by a shark while surfing in Georgetown County near Murrells Inlet Thursday, authorities and witnesses at the scene confirmed.
When the teen tried to push the shark away, it bit him on the hand.
The incident took place in about chest-deep water, WPDE-TV in Florence, S.C., reported.
According to the Global Shark Attack File, which records interactions between humans and sharks, there had been five shark-related incidents in South Carolina this year before Thursday’s bite. The department got a call about the attack around 12:30 p.m.
Medics transported the victim to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the victims had limbs amputated.
