Teen gets Thanksgiving invite when a grandma texts him by mistake
According to screenshots obtained by Buzzfeed, Jamal texted back asking “Who is this?”.
“I actually did think it was my grandma”, Hinton told The Arizona Republic, so he asked the texter to send a photo.
Grandma, identified as a woman named Wanda, met with Hinton face to face.
Earlier this week, a Phoenix, Arizona grandmother created a group chat with a few of her family members to invite them to her house for Thanksgiving dinner.
“I texted back and I said ‘who is this?’ And she was like, “it’s your grandma.’ Jamal told CNN affiliate KNXV-TV”.
After receiving this touching Thanksgiving invite, Hinton chose to share the conversation with his not-grandma on Twitter.
Like any good grandmother, Wanda Dench wanted to give her grandchildren advance notice of Thanksgiving plans this year.
She has reportedly since changed her number, but her actual grandson shared the new number with Hinton so they could keep in touch.
“I started getting these texts saying, ‘Can I come too, Grandma?”
Wanda then invited Jamal’s whole family over for the big Thanksgiving dinner on November 24 which they accepted.
“We’ve noticed that people are seeking these feel good, you know, uplifting heartwarming humanizing stories”, Tanya Chen, a Buzzfeed editor, told NBC News.
“I said sure you can”.
He said he knows “there really are still nice people out in the world”. “That’s what grandmas do … feed everyone”.
Jamal’s whole family is now going to Wanda’s for thanksgiving.
“I was like, ‘hmm, should I really go?”, Hinton said. Since he didn’t recognize the number he asked the sender to text a picture and, well, you have to see the hilarity.
