Teen Who Killed Massachusetts Math Teacher Gets Minimum 40 Years In Prison
Chism strangled, stabbed and raped his victim, according to the Globe, before removing her body to nearby woods and violating her with a tree branch.
Almost 30 years ago, Jeanne’s son, Shaun Ouilette, just 14, took a walk into a wooded area of Canton with Rod Matthews, also 14, who proceeded to beat Shaun to death with a baseball bat – for the thrill of watching him die.
“Although we very much appreciate this court’s commitment to seeking justice for Colleen, today’s sentence did not achieve that goal”, Peggy Ritzer said.
The 14-year-old boy who was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on a murder charge in the death of a MA teacher was named in court as Philip Chism.
“One can not see and hear what this court has during the course of this case without feeling that the crashing waves of this tragedy will never wane”, Lowy said as he handed down the sentence.
Ritzer’s parents, Tom and Peggy, criticized the Supreme Judicial court ruling that now prohibits juveniles from receiving life sentences without parole. So heinous and cold-blooded was the crime that at 14, Rod Matthews became the first teen to stand trial for murder as an adult.
At trial, the defense admitted Chism killed Ritzer but said he was suffering from severe mental illness and wasn’t criminally responsible for his actions. “He is evil, pure evil, and he must be punished”.
I didn’t protect Colleen.
As he viewed the surveillance video of Chism walking the same halls and stairwells he’d walked while looking for his daughter, Ritzer said, he felt “sick to know how close to her I was”. Ritzer’s family members ask for privacy as they mourn their “amazing, …”
In 2013, the Massachusetts SJC ruled that sentencing juveniles to life without a chance for parole is unconstitutional.
Chism’s mother, Diane, released a statement Friday expressing her condolences to Ritzer’s family. “A dad’s job is to fix things”, he said.
“Today’s sentence is unacceptable, ” Peggie Ritzer told reporters gathered at the Salem office of Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, shortly after Chism was sentenced to 25 years to life for murder, with a concurrent 40-year-and-one-day sentence for rape and armed robbery.
Philip Chism, 17, was convicted in December of killing Colleen Ritzer, a 24-year-old maths teacher at his suburban Boston high school. “I would give anything to be able to fix this”.
“On Oct. 22, 2013, our world ended”, Tom Ritzer said. Chism is shown leaving a classroom and following her in.
“This defendant once again purposely and planningly took steps to avoid detection”, she said, “snuck down a hallway and brutally assaulted a young woman in a bathroom”. She was a joy at home and in the world, they said. Then, he will be transferred to the Department of Corrections to serve out the rest of his sentence.
Peggie Ritzer sits with her husband Tom as they listen to the sentence of Philip Chism in Salem Superior Court, Salem, Mass., Friday, Feb. 26, 2016.
