Teenage boy struck, killed by Amtrak train north of DC
An Amtrak train fatally struck a teenage pedestrian on the tracks near the Boyds MARC station Monday afternoon.
Montgomery County Police say 16-year-old John Martin DeReggi Jr. of Boyds was hit about 4:45 p.m. Monday in Boyds, a town about 20 miles north of the nation’s capital. They are all expected to be OK, police say.
The investigation caused hourslong delays on MARC’s Brunswick Line.
The train stopped in the area of the accident.
The Wilmington/Newark Line was suspended in the wake of the woman being struck by the train at 7:23 a.m., and service on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor was delayed, authorities said. No one aboard the Amtrak train, which was carrying more than 200 passengers, was injured.
The Amtrak train was en route from Washington, D.C., to Chicago after a stop at Rockville, the Washington Post reports.
Six bystanders were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
