Teenager killed after he was pulled into a wood chipper feet first
A 19-year-old man has died after being pulled into a wood chipper on his first day on the job.
The high school graduate was pronounced dead at the scene of the gruesome accident in Gastonia, North Carolina, US, on Saturday.
Crawford hit the machine’s kill switch and put the machine in reverse, but Cox had been pulled and was killed instantly. That’s when the owner of the business, Jon Crawford, heard the machine get bogged down.
According to WSOC, Mason Cox, 19, had just starting working for Crawford’s Tree and Stump Grinding Service. “He was trying to find work and he had been putting in applications”, said Cox’s mother Debra Sisk.
“It was his first day on this job”.
“It’s bad enough that he’s gone”, she told a local news station.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident as well.
“I loved him very much and I’m going to miss him very much”. He said Cox was working for him as a subcontractor Saturday, He said he still isn’t sure how the accident happened.
The victim’s grandmother, Alice Neal, told WSOC-TV she has been haunted by the thoughts of her son’s final moments. Police ruled the incident as accidental, and no foul play is suspected.
“I have not slept”. He went on to say that “I would trade places with that child right now”.
