North Carolina ranks 20th when it comes to the number of women murdered by men, while South Carolina ranks first.
This past fiscal year, 6,519 domestic violence victims in our eight-county region sought help at the Refuge House.
Mike Sexton with the county’s women’s commission says domestic violence usually starts long before it leads to a homicide. In 98 percent of cases, victims will suffer from financial abuse, which means abusers will deny them access to money and financial resources. The center also has a Spanish-speaking advocate and encourages Spanish speakers to utilize its free, confidential services.
