Teixeira sparks Yankees to 9-5 Subway Series win over Mets
Mark Teixeira is one of the veterans that remained on the Yankees roster after Monday’s trade deadline, and he showed some flashes of his former All-Star form with a three-run home that put his team ahead in the second inning on Wednesday.
New York Yankees catcher Austin Romine returns the ball to the pitcher as New York Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes heads to the dugout after striking out during the ninth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, in New York….
The Baltimore Orioles scored four home runs – two from Pedro Alvarez – as they beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 while a five-run haul in the eighth inning gave the Philadelphia Phillies a 13-8 win against the San Francisco Giants.
Shortly after the Mets salvaged a split of the two-game series at Citi Field on Tuesday night with a 7-1 win over the Yankees, the Scranton Times reported that Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre catcher Gary Sanchez will be promoted to the Yankees in time to play Wednesday. Severino pitched 4.1 innings, giving up a run on a hit with five K’s and Tyler Clippard gave up a run in the ninth.
“My plans are for him to be there tomorrow with us”, Girardi said after the game. Rene Rivera singled to tie it at 3, but Teixeira got it all back in the second, when he blasted Matz’s sinker to rightfield for a three-run homer and the three-run lead. When he batted in the fifth, Matz’s first pitch hit Teixeira on the left shin. Words were exchanged, both players were held back from going any further, no one was ejected and warnings were issued. The Yankees took a 6-3 lead with two outs in the second when Teixeira hit an 0-1 pitch into the first row of the right-center field seats.
“Tonight was one of those nights where everybody was having a good time”, Teixeira said.
Matthews says that a source told ESPN.com that there’s “no chance” Alex gets released on Wednesday, but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t come in the next week, two weeks, or later in the season.
In a sign he might stick around this time, Sanchez was assigned No. 24, down from 57 earlier this season and 73 late past year. The Mets lost for the sixth time in eight games, including two of three to the Yankees this week.
Bruce went 0 for 4 with a walk, dropping to 0 for 8 since he was acquired from Cincinnati on Monday.
Curtis Granderson kicked off the game with his franchise-leading 18th leadoff homer – right over the short porch he’s missed so much – and Walker and Cespedes hit back-to-back singles. Beltran’s locker, the one by the bathroom entrance used previously by Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano, was empty, as were the stalls of Chapman and Nova. Clippard moved into Miller’s space.
Still, more opportunities have opened up for De Aza recently, as Lagares hit the disabled list with a thumb injury last week and Cespedes has been dealing with a sore right quad, leaving the Mets with no true center fielder. In Green’s previous start, at Cleveland on July 8, he gave up consecutive home runs to Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis starting the first. He reached third base later in the inning and when Collins made a pitching change, Robles began yelling at Teixeira and appeared to accuse the first baseman of switching signs.
Cespedes, who hasn’t started since Saturday because of an injured quadriceps, pinch-hit and had a run-scoring infield single in a four-run seventh. Duda traveled to Marina del Rey, California, where he was examined Tuesday by Dr. Robert Watkins. RHP Zack Wheeler is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League in his first game since Tommy John surgery on March 25 a year ago. The Yankees announced LHP Jacob Lindgren will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow Friday.
