Tennessee shooter’s uncle released from custody
On Monday, a Marine challenged Americans to “teach Obama respect” by flying all US flags at half-staff in honour of the five service members killed in the deadly Chattanooga attack. Five didn’t make it.
Abdulazeez killed two more service members before apparently trying to head back inside. He fatally shot one person inside the building.
Brier said the troops “reacted the way you would expect” during an attack, rapidly going room to room to get others to safety.
Reinhold confirmed that Chattanooga police had been in auto pursuit of the alleged gunman, Mohamad Abdulazeez, after he first fired shots from his vehicle at an armed forces recruitment center. David A. Wyatt, 35, of Ozark, Ark.; Sgt. Thomas Sullivan and Lance Cpt. Squire K. Wells, known to friends as Skip, was 21.
“Our thoughts and prayers as a Nation are with the service members killed last week in Chattanooga”.
Twenty Marines and two Navy corpsman were in the middle of an otherwise mundane task, just checking their equipment after a training mission, when the silver Mustang convertible came barreling through the gates of the reserve center on the banks of the Tennessee River.
Reinhold says the gunman went inside the building and shot a service member.
Gen. Paul W. Brier, commanding general of the 4th Marine Division, said the Marines responded to the attack as he would have expected.
“At this time, we’re treating him as a home-grown violent extremist”, Reinhold said.
In a downward spiral, Abdulazeez would abuse sleeping pills, opioids, painkillers and marijuana, along with alcohol, the representative said. “Once they got them to safety, a few willingly ran back to the fight”. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.
Jordan regularly denies claims by human rights activists that it tortures confessions out of security detainees.
Lawyer Abdel Qader al-Khatib said he has been barred from seeing his client, Reuters reported.
One of his uncles has been detained in Jordan for questioning by U.S. and Jordanian intelligence officials.
Abdulazeez’s family says he suffered from depression, an assertion the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it is investigating.
“When history records what happened in Chattanooga last week, it won’t be remembered for the heinous actions of one individual”, Brier said. A third weapon was found in Abdulazeez’s auto.
Recently, Abdulazeez had begun working the night shift at a manufacturing plant and was taking medication to help with problems sleeping in the daytime, the person said, and he had a prescription for muscle relaxants because of a back problem.
The shooter proceeded to enter the building, hitting Navy sailor Randall Smith, who later died of his injuries. The shooting occurred on Thursday morning and investigators are still piecing together what Abdulazeez was doing and who he was with over that two-day period. They know that any given time they could take fire, that’s what they do.
Neither Abdulazeez nor his uncle was religious or belonged to any sort of political organization, al-Khateeb said. “We don’t have any indication anyone else was assisting him”.
