“I give my best every game, but knowing that he was coming, I just tried to make something happen”, Evan Berry said.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield completed 8 of 25 passes for 84 yards with two interceptions in the first three quarters. The other Vol was Stanley Morgan in 1975 against Maryland.

“This is where you have to rely on the competitive structure of your program and the character of your program”, UT coach Butch Jones explains. Prior to the fateful fourth quarter and overtime, the Vols had given up just 173 total yards while also limiting OU to only 2-of-12 on third down.

But overall, the vertical passing game still has some work to do as Dobbs struggled to consistently connect on the deep ball with his receivers. He connected on 12 of his first 13 passes. And the disappointment spilled over into Sunday as fans took to internet message boards to vent their anger and frustration with 18- to 22-year-old players and their coaches, insisting that they are cutting off their donations to the university, and declaring that they are giving up football altogether.

The Vols’ second-quarter scoring spree began when Dobbs found Hurd for a five-yard touchdown with Hurd diving for the pylon.

It will be interesting to see how he fares in his first significant appearance for the Vols alongside a defensive line that could also see two true freshmen – Kahlil McKenzie and Shy Tuttle – seeing action on Saturday.

“LaDarrell McNeil has been cleared to play, so he will be back to full-go in practice (Monday)”, Jones adds. However, his season and perhaps football career were feared lost in late August when he was ruled out with neck instability, one of the scarier phrases in sports and life in general.

“Very, very fitting for that young man”, Jones said. “It was great to really get him going”. Stepping in for Cam Sutton after he got a few opportunities, running back Alvin Kamara took over at punt returner and took a 50-yarder back for a touchdown.

Tennessee scored twice on special teams, turned three turnovers from its Southern Conference visitors into 21 points and used the game to work on some of the kinks in the passing game.

For now, Utah tries help with Western Carolina.
