Tennis Australia wants to ‘clear the air’ with Bernard Tomic
It came on the eve of Australia’s ultimately successful Davis Cup quarter-final tie against Kazakhstan, from which Tomic was dumped after a tirade against Australian tennis administrators following his Wimbledon exit.
Tomic was arrested in Miami last week after holding a noisy party at a penthouse suite in his hotel and the 22-year-old later said he was still “in a fight” with TA and had no intention of making peace.
However, Tennis Australia president Steve Healy said Tomic’s criticisms were unjustified and he needs to hear that.
“We want to get Bernard and we want to have a chat to clear the air with those issues and get him back hopefully for the semi-final if possible.”
Healy added that Tennis Australia has given him fantastic support and they we want him to understand and appreciate this fact, adding that the body was ready to welcome him for the Davis Cup.
Last month, TA’s high performance chief Pat Rafter said funding would be cut to Tomic and his sister Sara, citing the uncooperative attitude of their father John as part of the reason.
The governing body said it was an honest “clerical error” and quickly apologised but Tomic was said to be furious and it remains to be seen if he can be persuaded to play against GB in the big clash over the weekend of September 18-20.
Tomic is in Bogota, Colombia preparing to defend his Claro Open title.
What kind of example is Tomic setting to those aspiring to represent Australia one day in the Davis Cup?
The Great Britain team, on the other hand, might seem like a one-man army with Murray featuring in nine of the 11 matches they have won over the past two years.
