Terps Hold Steady At No. 3 In Top 25 Basketball Polls
Both teams were gunning it from long range (Georgetown at 42.1 percent, Maryland at 38.1 percent) and riding those 3s to quick spurts in the tug-of-war between the neighboring teams. This is a game we will be talking about for a while. “I don’t think you could write a better script. It went down to the wire”.
Georgetown led by seven in the second half before wilting.
A different Maryland team came out of the timeout, with Trimble and Sulaimon keying an 8-0 run.
“That was really important”, Trimble said. Hayes – a player to watch for the Hoyas – led Georgetown with 16 points.
Coming off a solid performance in which he recorded a double-double, senior center Bradley Hayes might cause the biggest problem for Maryland as he scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against Radford.
The two schools used to play on a regular basis from 1947 to 1976.
Maryland men’s basketball and Georgetown haven’t played against one another since 1993.
The score was tied at 33-33, but in the second half Georgetown began to pull away from the Terrapins with aggressive play inside and on the boards.
Trimble did end up scoring 17 of his 24 points in the second half, including 12 from the free throw line.
“I don’t take anything positive from being competitive”, Thompson said. “The atmosphere out there was insane”.
“We were a little bit rushed”, Turgeon said. “Of course he hit the big three”.
Maryland made 23 of 32 free throws, while the Hoyas were nine of 12 from the charity stripe. Georgetown was whistled for 25 fouls, while Maryland committed 15.
Maryland got off to a slightly slow start, possibly a result of the heightened event status of having Georgetown on campus for the first time in 40 years, but hung with the Hoyas and surged late when it counted to win 75-71 on Tuesday in arguably the game of the night.
“That’s a big rivalry”, said Georgetown sophomore Tre Campbell, who grew up in Washington. “Which made our bench even shorter”, Thompson said. “What a great college basketball game”.
Not only did unranked Georgetown return the game that began the 1993-94 season, they almost flipped the script against the No. 3 Terps. “That is where the team needed me”.
The Hoyas, despite winning the battle of the boards, 36-28, fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1998-99.
“Wow. What a game”, Turgeon said.
Said Maryland coach Mark Turgeon: “We were lucky to win, but we’ll take it”. Jake is a great shooter, but that speaks volumes to our team and the trust that we have in each other. “Our communication wasn’t great”.
