Terror couple’s neighbor to be charged
If the guns were bought for an earlier planned attack, or if Marquez knew the guns were going to be used in a voilent act when he gave them to Farook, he could be face federal felony charges.
Enrique Marquez legally purchased the two AR-15 assault-style rifles that the couple used in the attack on an office party of Farook’s colleagues.
Authorities say Marquez has told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he and Farook talked about conducting some kind of attack in 2010 but called it off after unrelated terrorism arrests in southern California.
Two U.S. law enforcement officials said Marquez had been drinking heavily when he checked himself in at UCLA.
Tashfeen Malik came to the US on a K-1 fiance visa in July 2014 and passed multiple background checks and at least two in-person interviews, one in Pakistan and another after she married Syed Farook. Police shot and killed them hours later.
Marquez, who had worked at Walmart and at a bar recently, also is related to Farook’s family by marriage.
The man who supplied guns to the attackers of San Bernardino, California, will be charged for criminal offences, said Federal authorities on Thursday.
Comey said authorities determined that in late 2013, Farook and Malik had direct private Internet conversations “sharing their joint commitment to jihad and martyrdom”.
The Dec. 2 attack that killed 14 and injured 21 was carried out by Syed Rizwan Farook, an American citizen of Pakistani decent, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, who was born in Pakistan, spent time in Saudi Arabia, and entered the US on a fiancée visa in 2014.
Investigators have been trying to corroborate Marquez’s information and, as of last week, hadn’t verified details of the alleged 2012 plot.
Marquez converted to Islam about the time that Farook became more devoted to the faith around 2008.
Records show that Marquez married Mariya Chernykh at a ceremony at the Islamic Society of Corona-Norco, though the mosque’s facility manager denied it occurred there. She believes her friend would not have helped Farook and Malik if he had known the couple’s scheme.
The White House announced on Wednesday that President Obama will stop in San Bernardino on Friday as he travels to Hawaii for Christmas.
