Terrorism: Buhari calls for more assistance from Commonwealth for Nigeria, others
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that violent extremism and terrorism could only thrive and endure if good people remained idle and complacent.
He demanded that the proposed committee, when established, should visit member-countries of the Commonwealth where terrorist organisations have footholds with a view to evolving practical strategies for more meaningful assistance to the affected countries. According to Mr. Adesina, President Buhari called for the creation of a Commonwealth Committee which would assist Nigeria and other nations impacted by the “scourge” of global terrorism.
Speaking at the Conference of Parties 21 (COP21) in Paris, France, Buhari said there was increase in extreme climate conditions such as flood and drought, stressing that such factors have resulted in the destruction of many economic and social structures.
“We have agreed to a joint task-force for the elimination of Boko Haram, but it may not be easy, especially after the events in Libya when trained people with weapons moved back to Sahel region from where they were recruited by the former Libyan leader”.
He said: “Like many countries, Nigeria continues to witness the adverse effects of climate change in all its ramifications”.
The leader of Nigerian nation will also participate in a summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Benin Republic.
“I am grateful to Britain, France and the United States”.
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday left Malta for Paris where he will present Nigeria’s statement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to begin in the French capital today.
“Indeed, for the Agreement to be durable, it must recognize not only the emission right but also the survival rights of the citizens of developing countries”, he added. “We have to evolve new ways of tackling them, stamp them out of existence”.
