Tesla Adds ‘Ludicrous Mode’ To Already-Fast Model S
Tesla has announced an assortment of updates for its Model S range, which include the addition of new specifications, plus a new “Ludicrous Mode“.
He added that the SUV will be even more powerful than the upgraded Model S and will accelerate from zero to 60 in around 3.3 seconds, despite being a heavier auto.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced a new “Ludicrous Mode” performance upgrade for the Model S P85D saloon. The longest-range version, the 85D, will be capable of 300 miles per charge in highway cruising at 65 mph. He also compared “Insane Mode” to “having your own private roller coaster”.
The hardware and software needed to use Ludicrous mode will run $10,000 on all new Model S P85Ds, but the automaker is offering it to all existing owners for just $5,000 including installation for the next six months.
Tesla has introduced a new entry-level Model S, alongside range and performance upgrades for the 85kWh versions.
The company says the speed breakthrough came via the idea for an advanced smart fuse for the battery.
Jefferies analyst Dan Dolev said in a note to investors on Friday that cash concerns for Tesla were “overblown” and that he expected strong cash generation in the fourth quarter as Tesla ramped up sales of its Model X.
This has been coupled with an upgrade to the main battery pack contactor, which eschews steel for Inconel, an oxidation and corrosion resistant superalloy. The net result is that we can safely increase the max pack output from 1300 to 1500 Amps.
Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode is enabled by a battery pack and electronics upgrade that effectively extends the acceleration of the P85D past a 30 miles per hour threshold.
Why is this important to news about Tesla?
“First, I should address something that might be on your mind, like: ‘Where the heck is the Model X and the Model 3!?”
“And now, anyone can grab a wrecked Tesla Model S, Mercedes B electric, or Toyota RAV4 electric, as they share the same motor, and reuse these motors in any vehicle”.
