Tesla: Autopilot improvements coming
Tesla Motors will release an update to its semi-autonomous driverless feature, Autopilot.
What the Autopilot self-induced disengagement would mean for a driver who, for example, is asleep and is unaware of what’s going on, is unclear.
Elon Musk recently hinted that Tesla’s 8.0 software update will feature “very noticeable” improvements over the current technology. Since the Model S first went on sale, Tesla has fixed bugs, improved performance and added new features via these free updates, which are sent to the vehicle via its internet connection at night, while it is recharging.
Tesla has also taken its first steps into the insurance market by launching a new bespoke scheme for Tesla cars in Australia.
On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Musk is now dealing with a cash issues at both Tesla and SolarCity.
Aside from the whole Autopilot situation, Tesla Motors wants to raise additional cash this year, so that it could fund the development of the Model 3 Sedan, and complete the construction of the Gigafactory.
Rather than simply slowing down the vehicle, the updated features will reportedly block the driver from re-engaging Autopilot if it is disengaged at any point. The driver will not be able to reactivate the Autopilot until the auto is stopped and put in “Park”. So far, it looks like it would only affect the Autosteer feature of the Autopilot and TACC would still be available for the duration of the drive.
American vehicle maker Tesla Motors, is planning to raise funds to counter a severe cash crunch.
There’s no official word on when Tesla plans to roll out this update to users.
The “Autopilot” system works by aggregating data from sensors, radar, cameras, and is capable of handling lane changing and steering. Now, I expect more Tesla owners to not only be more responsible with using the Autopilot system, but just as important, to be vigilant in ensuring that the system is being used properly. According to a new report from Eletrek, the 8.0 version will include a feature that tackles freeway interchanges.
