Tesla Model X Will Launch Next Month
Earlier this year, BMW had to offer a software patch after hackers remotely unlocked the doors of its cars.
Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer of cyber-security firm Lookout, and Marc Rogers, principal security researcher at Cloudflare, decided to test Tesla’s Model S. The duo managed to turn off the vehicle at low speed.
The Palo Alto, California, maker of electric cars also lowered its expectations for full-year sales because it’s not confident suppliers will be able to meet its production goals for the Model X in the fourth quarter. For their research, he and Rogers plugged a laptop into a Model S Ethernet port and exploited the vulnerabilities until they tapped into the entertainment software. The latest report showed how vulnerable the Tesla Mode S is to hackers.
While direct access to the vehicle was required to perform the hack, Rogers and Mahaffey still warn that hackers could eventually compromise a driver’s safety.
Using the hidden cable installed in Tesla cars for maintenance and technicians to fix flaws, the security experts were able to search for flaws in software.
Later, in a parking lot, they disabled the SUV’s brakes.
Tesla boasts that its Model S is the most technologically advanced vehicle on earth, powered by electricity, always online, and with each component controlled by an advanced computer system.
Good to know! But how do we avoid these sorts of compromises in the future, especially when cars are only to become more connected? Although it suffered from some vulnerabilities, it is one of the most security-focused companies on the market.
Last month, Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.4 million vehicles in the U.S following a similar attack on its Jeep Cherokee.
During its quarterly letter to shareholders, Tesla confirmed that its Model X was coming in September, although those Tesla Model X deliveries will be limited for a short period of time.
John Thompson, CEO and CIO at Vilas Capital, was on CNBC after Tesla declared its numbers to share his outlook for the stock.
