Tesla partners with Manhattan garages to install new charging stations around town
Tesla is planning to partner with nearly two dozen garages around the Manhattan to put charging units.
“We wanted to move to an urban charging network that meets the needs of those who live in apartments or commute into a big city”, Alexis Georgeson, a Tesla spokeswoman, told The Times.
The new chargers are just like the ones electric-car owners would install in their own garages.
This initiative follows installation of charging stations along major highways as part of Tesla’s plan to offer more places for drivers to replenish their batteries.
With parking companies like ParkIt and Champion and hotels like the Waldorf Astoria reported to participate, Tesla’s charging plan will help New Yorkers without their own garages to recharge their electric cars. Tesla refers to the Level 2 stations as “destination chargers”, and has been quietly setting them up at locations such as resorts, parks, and restaurants, where cars tend to remain parked for long periods of time.
Tesla plans to construct more Supercharging stations in Brisbane and Queensland by next year, Mr. Walker said. There is a cost associated with charging Model S sedans that will be determined by each garage and added to existing parking fees. The new chargers can give a Tesla an additional 58 miles of range per hour of charge, meaning owners who live and/or work in Manhattan will never have to worry about being empty. Whereas a Tesla owner with a private garage can simply install a Tesla-branded 240-volt charger and charge their vehicle fully overnight, city dwellers are reliant on limited public charging stations. In contrast, the company’s highway superchargers can charge in about a half-hour. Initially, the facility includes two dozen locations starting from Wall Street to 94 Street.
“Although upward of 90 percent of charging is done at your home whilst you sleep, Superchargers provide free long distance travel and show that electric vehicles are a no compromise and compelling option for all motorists”, he said. Chargers will come to 30 garages in the next couple of weeks, and Tesla plans to add more in the near future. Gardi loves to drive his vehicle but believes parking and charging are still a big task.
