Texas A&M, Sumlin trying to reverse slow slide
At Southeastern Conference Media Days on Tuesday, Sumlin said he believed there was “no greater teacher” for Knight than losing his job at Oklahoma. “We spoke about them, about getting Tennessee football back to relevance, and they’ve really been the foundation piece for us”.
“And, you know, the speed differential was monumental”. He has run for 349 yards on 77 carries in his first two collegiate seasons, so he will be the feature back for the first time in his college career.
The 6-foot-5, 262-pound Garrett led the SEC with 12½ sacks, 19½ tackles for a loss and five forced fumbles.
Garrett, an All-America performer a year ago, did nothing Tuesday to tip his hand about his postseason intentions.
“I think it’s a compliment to everyone in our program of how far we’ve come”, Jones said. “We spent a lot of time together just talking about everything, and we talk about coaching is creating change, changing young adults, and she was able to do that and I’m very blessed and fortunate”.
“But also, I pulled guys aside for one-on-one conversations to get to know them as people, not just football players”.
For much of the last four football seasons, Johnny Manziel has been one of the most polarizing figures in all of football.
Along with Alabama and Arkansas, Texas A&M is one of three teams in the SEC that must replace both its starting quarterback and running back.
Granted, each Sumlin-led team finished with a winning record, but while all were at some point ranked in the Top 10 of the Associated Press Poll, only one finished there, with another in the Top 25.
A total of 29 athletes from multiple sports were part of the 36-person contingent, when school officials partnered with Mission of Hope Haiti.
Knight this offseason stepped into the unusual void left by two undergraduate transfers who had both started games in 2015 but chose to transfer.
Knight, a graduate transfer from Oklahoma who won the starting job in spring drills, said the shared experience between teammates is “going to help moving forward”. “We do a lot of the similar things. In a situation like that, they appreciated everything we did for them and we appreciated the lessons that they taught to us”.
One of Trevor Knight’s first acts as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback was to gift several of his teammates with an experience they’ll remember forever – a mission trip to Haiti. Two straight years where we failed to meet expectations (despite how unrealistic those expectations may have been after 5-0 starts) have resulted in many folks putting Sumlin in a “good coach, but not good enough” box. Sumlin says that departure from the Sooners could be the best thing that has happened to Knight.
“I was eight or nine, watching the movie “Ali” with my grandmother, sitting there and just made a decision to start writing poetry”, Garrett said.
Garrett cited his father, Lawrence, and his late grandmother, Juanita Garrett, as key individuals who help him stay grounded when others are quick to place him on a pedestal because of athletic achievements.
On the field, Knight’s transition has been just as smooth. These are very, very serious issues that surround every college campus, they surround society today, and we’ll continue to educate our players on the importance of it. My grandmother was a low-maintenance person. He worked hard to be in the best shape of his life … “I really like the way he plays”. Asked the subject of his favorite poem, Garrett replied: “Love”.
So what are Sanders’ expectations for the Bears’ rookie pass rusher? Garrett says simply, that he hopes the Aggie defense can improve on what they did a year ago.
“I’m still improving. I think I can have a great, breakout season this year”.
“I can tell you this”. “We hold the highest standards of ourselves to be great this upcoming season each and every time we step on the field”.
By the time his junior season rolled around past year, he had lost his starting job to Taylor Mayfield.
