Texas leaves Charlie Strong and Longhorns players in limbo
If Texas fires Strong, it has been reported by the Austin American-Statesman that members of the football team will boycott the next game against TCU (Friday afternoon) in protest. “I’ve said it all along, we will evaluate the body of work after the regular season”, Perrin said. Strong is 16-20 in three seasons at Texas and 12-14 in Big 12 play.
Friday’s game against TCU holds implications as the 5-6 Longhorns look to clinch a bowl game.
The NCAA Team Texas Longhorns faced the Kansas Jayhawks yesterday and the game ended in a close fight.
The head coach said he’s heard the rumors and reports about his possible firing next week, but he reiterated the same line that the university has had since Sunday: His job will be evaluated after the TCU game. The Longhorns are 5-6 in his third season at Texas and his chances of remaining head coach are so bleak that it raises questions about whether the school would provide some clarity on his future before Strong’s regularly scheduled Monday media availabilities. “That takes time. I’d just say bear with us and have a little more patience”.
Texas President Greg Fenves, who has been a strong supporter of the coach, stayed silent on Sunday.
Several Texas players have reportedly threatened to boycott the game against TCU after hearing the news of Charlie Strong’s release. A win by Texas on Friday will send them bowling for the first time since Strong’s first year at the school. But Strong appeared at his weekly press conference Monday and said he hasn’t been told of a decision.
When asked about the rumors and what Strong has meant to him, senior defensive tackle Paul Boyette Jr. lost control of his emotions Monday.
Charlie Strong didn’t sound like a coach who knew he was on his way out after an egregious loss at previously 1-9 Kansas on Saturday. “It’s so critical for them to get to a bowl game”. The decision comes following the Longhorns’ overtime loss against Kansas University, the first time the program has lost to Kansas since 1938. “We’ll discuss where our team stands after that”, Perrin said.
From the moment Charlie Strong was hired in 2014, the 56-year-old coach never seemed to live up to the unrealistic expectations that came with the job of being head football coach at Texas.
“No, I don’t. No idea”, Strong said. Strong’s five core values and his guidance of his players have earned him their dedication, devotion and love. He demoted offensive playcaller Shawn Watson after a season-opening loss to Notre Dame and struggled through another up-and-down year for a 5-7 finish, despite upset wins over Oklahoma and Baylor. And while Strong made the right offensive tweaks this year with new coordinator Sterlin Gilbert and freshman quarterback Shane Buechele, the defense – his area of expertise – had huge lapses early in the season.
