Texas Longhorns at Baylor Bears Start Time, Odds, Free Pick
Texas controlled the game from the beginning and led 20-0 at halftime.
Baylor players came across the field and mostly yelled and shoved a little, and it doesn’t seem that any punches were thrown.
The Longhorns (5-7, 4-5 in the Big 12) saw their second straight losing season come to an end.
No. 12 Baylor and Texas are concluding their seasons on Saturday by renewing their long-standing rivalry, and things got heated in the first quarter. He needs just 58 yards to surpass Hodges Mitchell for the 10th most rushing yards in Texas history, but considering how he’s looked lately, that could take 58 touches unless he breaks one loose for 2 or 3.
Baylor still had a chance after the Longhorns punted, but Jefferson threw an incomplete pass from the Texas 47 on the last play of the game. That would now send Oklahoma State (10-2) to New Orleans for the January 1 game.
Baylor: WR Corey Coleman is the FBS leader with 20 TD catches and is third with 119.5 receiving yards a game, even after being limited to one catch for 8 yards in a rain-drenched loss at TCU the night after Thanksgiving.
It is Baylor’s first home game since a loss to Oklahoma three weeks ago ended its 20-game home winning streak, and playoff hopes.
After scoring on their opening drive in the first 11 games, the Bears were poised to make it happen again, driving from their own 25 down to the Texas’ 30. Strong said. “Then they left their sideline and we were trying to get our guys back then you were just trying to separate everything”. Ted Emrich of ESPNU pointed out the wide receiver hadn’t played QB since his junior year of high school in 2010. Baylor had more total yards and first downs than Texas, but two interceptions and two fumbles meant the Bears were playing catch up all afternoon. The running back tandem of Johnny Jefferson and Terence Williams ran the ball mostly off direct snaps to cover 69 yards in less than three minutes en route to a touchdown.
Taking advantage of the turnover and superb field position, head coach Charlie Strong’s side extended their lead to 17-0 after Swoopes ran a 9-yard keeper for the score.
Meanwhile, Texas continued to roll right along. But with no timeouts and after a wide receiver pass meant to go to emergency quarterback Lynx Hawthorne, Baylor eventually fell short of the touchdown needed to win the game. Both teams rushed the field and Texas safety Kevin Vaccaro was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, but there were no ejections.
Baylor players came off their bench to join the scuffle but it did not escalate. The game also airs as a live stream online.
