Texas officer, 11-year-old die in crash during police chase
DPS says Baumgartner responded to a report of a man urinating in public and was almost struck by the suspect’s vehicle.
“The patrol unit took severe damage and came to rest at the end of the edge of the intersection and struck a pole”, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Richard Standifer told Engle. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the officer, who has been identified as Patton Village Sgt. Stacey Baumgartner, was dispatched to the Valero Corner store at SH 242 and U.S. 59.
The second vehicle repeatedly flipped after hitting the cruiser and came to a stop upside down along the shoulder, police said. At least four others were seriously injured in the collision, KHOU reported. As the Patton Village police sergeant approached the man, later identified as Garrett William Nee, 29, Nee allegedly attempted to run over Baumgartner.
Police said that Nee returned to the scene of the crime after the accident.
‘For whatever reason, he saw fit to come back.
Baumgartner was transported to the hospital with CPR in progress but was declared dead on arrival. “I would like to think that’s a decent thing for a person to do”. Prosecutors say six other people in the SUV were hospitalized in critical condition. Nee was transported to jail and later booked into the Montgomery County Jail on multiple charges, including murder and intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help his family with their expenses.
“The average person who evades law enforcement rarely, rarely comes back”, added Standifer, during an interview with KTRK-TV. Sgt. Baumgartner has a two-year-old daughter.
Standifer says the SUV hit the patrol vehicle at an intersection in Patton Village, 30 miles northeast of Houston.
