Texas Senate again OKs ‘bathroom bill’ over police criticism
With a Republican majority in the Senate, despite opposition from many Democrats, the bill was able to move forward. Abbott was late to the game, but he joined in with Patrick by resurrecting the issue for consideration during the special session when the business community would have preferred leaving it in the legislative mortuary.
At an all-purpose rally on opening day, the crowd’s signs were a guide to the hot issues being considered inside the building.
The same bill failed during the regular session that ended in May, amid outcry from top businesses and LGBT activists.

What we found is this: “There were no known incidents of bathroom assaults performed by men posing as transgender women”, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Tuesday. Straus has cited the high risk of suicide among transgender people, recently telling The New Yorker, “I don’t want the suicide of a single Texan on my hands”.
AUSTIN, Texas ― The Republican-dominated state Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would force trans Texans to use bathrooms of the gender on their birth certificates, rather than the one they identify with.
Democrats also noted that Texas police chiefs, as well as advocates for survivors of sexual assault, have said SB 3 would not improve public safety and seeks to address problems in bathroom behavior that do not exist.

Texas senators are considering a bill that would lower the annual percent increase of property taxes cities and counties would be allowed to collect before triggering an election. Transgender advocacy groups and groups like the ACLU have said they will continue to assert their interpretation of Title IX in court.
Texas property taxes have gone up because property values have gone up.
It does not apply to colleges or universities, private schools or state agencies, Kolkhorst said.
“Meanwhile, the state budgets fewer state dollars for school districts and uses that windfall elsewhere”, Howard says.
Queried about whether Pennsylvania has yet seen a state effort to preempt local rules on cellphone use, Gym said she didn’t think so, adding, “please don’t give our state any bad ideas”.
But charter schools will actually gain $1.4 billion, Howard says.
Supporters of permitless handgun carry in the Lone Star State have a glimmer of hope with a new bill introduced this week – if the state’s avowedly pro-gun governor plays ball. It would also create a program, also open to students with disabilities, to award smaller $500 grants to help pay with additional education costs, like after-school tutoring, special instructional materials and transportation expenses.
