Texas vs. Cal Ends In Controversial Fashion
“It’s a big win for our program”. Dawkins, starting in place of injured Anu Solomon for the second straight game, was 16 of 21 for 235 yards and carried 15 times for 118 more.
However, this time the call/non-call might have made the difference in the game.
Texas lost its offensive momentum in the third quarter.
Of course Webb had plenty of help from Chad Hansen, the nation’s leading receiver, who caught 12 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns – and added a two-point conversion on an end-around. With true freshman quarterback Shane Buechele recording two games with 200-plus passing yards, the Longhorns went into California Memorial with a mission to separate itself from the rest of the Big 12 collectively heading into conference play.
And then it was up to the defense, which had its issues against lesser opponents, but stepped up against the Longhorns. But after a review, officials determined that while Cal did fumble the ball at the 1-yard-line, there was “no immediate recovery” and therefore Cal retained the ball on the 1-yard line.
“I don’t think that hurt us”, he said, per Mike Finger of the Houston Chronicle. “They did a great job all night”, he said, and this week, Cal ran 40 times and passed 40 times, a balance made possible by the play up front.
We expected a shootout given the ties Cal coaches have to the Air Raid.
Texas punted, and Vic Enwere appeared to ice it when he ran 55 yards for a touchdown. Against Cal, the Longhorns allowed 508 total yards of offense.
The Bears bounced back after a Chibuzo Nwokocha interception, cutting the margin to three on another Enwere 1-yard plunge which prompted Strong to switch back to Buechele (son of former major leaguer and one-time John Elway roommate Steve Buechele).
Texas went over 300 rushing yards and kept its offense humming for most of the evening, even when freshman quarterback Shane Buechele missed a swath of the first half with an apparent chest injury.
Cal ran out the clock for the seven-point win.
You may have heard that the California Golden Bears had a fairly nice win over the Texas Longhorns.
But their inability to slow down Webb and the Bears did them in. Cal finally scored with just:07 seconds before the end of the first quarter.
Texas picked up the ball within about three seconds of Enwere’s dropping it, without any audible officials’ whistles until right after UT’s recovery. Texas tied it on Trent Domingue’s 35-yard field goal at the 5:29 mark. E ven if it is determined that Texas did not recover the ball soon enough, it is clear that the ball became dead in the end zone and it should have been a touchback for Texas.
