Thai FA President Makudi Follows Blatter And Platini After Federation Internationale de Football Association Ban
FIFA’s ethics committee suspended Makudi for 90 days as investigation proceeds into a possible breach of the Federation Internationale de Football Association Code of Ethics.
He won the FAT election two years ago against Virach Chanpanich but, amid controversy, Worawi was given a suspended 16-month sentence by a Thai court in July for falsifying documents to amend the FAT statutes ahead of the vote. “1, on the grounds that a breach of the Code of Ethics appears to have been committed and a decision on the main issue may not be taken early enough”, Federation Internationale de Football Association said in a statement released on its website.
Makudi, who was on the board in December 2010 when it voted to award the 2018 World Cup to Russian Federation and the 2022 tournament to Qatar, will now face a formal investigation.
Worawi told AFP he would fight to save his name and meant to stay in the Thai election even though he is banned immediately “from all football activities at national and worldwide level for 90 days”. “I am not guilty of anything”.
The case has been the subject of formal investigation proceedings, Federation Internationale de Football Association said.
Earlier this month, FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini were implicated in the scandal and suspended from all football activities for 90 days as well by the FIFA ethics committee.
Swiss prosecutors opened criminal proceedings against Blatter on September 25 on suspicion of “criminal mismanagement” as well as on suspicion of “misappropriation of funds”.
Another allegation was that Blatter made a “disloyal payment” of 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million) to Michel Platini, the president of European football’s governing body UEFA, in February 2011.
The 79-year-old, who was due to stand aside from the organisation he has run since 1998 in February, is appealing his suspension.
British media reports, never confirmed, said Worawi was one of five officials under investigation by FIFA’s ethics committee for alleged misconduct in votes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
